Hi guys, i build my first pc from scratch this week and all went well (i think)
i have been waiting all week for windows 7 to arrive, now it is here and i have installed it fine, after being on for 5 or so mins after installation it turned itself off, much to my annoyance. It will switch back on momentarily i.e. the fans start spiining for a second then it turns off again, this is my 1st build so i have no idea what the problem could be.

this is what i have

amd phenom ii x4 940
corsair vx550
kingston hyperX 1066 4gb
ati radeon hd4870
wd black caviar 640gb
lg gh22ls50
asus m3a78-vm mobo

would appreciate any help, thanks in advance

Got 2 120mm fans and 1 80mm plus 120mm exhaust fan, cpu has only got stock cooler, brought a xigmatek hdt 1283 but was to big, having to use stock tili find a suitable smaller one, i have taken out 1 stick of ram and gpu and its runs for about 3 mins then off again.

it wont even power up to bios screen now, fans just flcker on that back off straight away, starting to loose my patience, have spend a lot of money on this, i kno these things happen but i dont understand why it was running just fine and then now it wont even turn on

on kingston website it says the ram requires +1.8v but i cant see what its running at at the moment cos the damn thing wont turn on lol

All standoffs on and have just taken the whole thing apart, right down to taken the cpu off of the mobo, in process of put all connections back in and then for the next boot up, have checked and double checked everything, and after that i checked again, thanks for your help guys

right everything back in and still not working, i am beginning to think its the power button on the case, the 1st few times i ever turned it on it worked fine and now i press it and the blue led flicks on and off and then nothing

or connect the pins to another switch on the case, might be safer.

sorry i am a noob to all this, what other switch could i connect it to, do you mean swap the reset and power switch over, its only a cheapy ****** own brand case, i dint think what case i have would play a factor in how good the hardware is so i went for a cheap and cheerful one, had good views so i dint think i could go wrong really

i have 2x2gb kingston hyperX pc2-8500, i was told it is compatible with my mobo, do you think this is the problem, there is 2 yellow slots and 2 black slots, the manual says use yellow 1st side by side, is this right?

Morning guys another day of tryin to get this darn thing to start, gonna try short the power connectors as it seems other ppl have had the same problem as me and thats what it has been, that means i can easily get a new and better case without feeling to guilty bout spending the money, failing this would it be worth bringing it to a pro, or just keep tryin, ie rma mobo?

after leaving it all night i switched everything on without removing a thing and it started managed to get through the bios screen and upped the ram voltage after this i f10'd to save and exit then it went kaput again and mont even switch on, i am stumped on this one, why would it start after 8 hours and then just turn off and not turn back on again

i just mangaed to get back into bios after removing reset switch, and hdd then before i could even go across to check temps it cut out again, its shorting somewhere but i just dont kno where. i have tried both sticks of ram in both the dimm1 sockets and that doesnt seem to make a difference, both stick of ram have been in on every occasion it has got to bios post.

everything is out now, mobo is on antistatic bag and all that is in is 1 stick of ram, cpu and hsf. plugged power cable back in, 4 pin and 24 pin and it still only just flutters the cooler fan. gonna try the ram in another slot and then the other stick of ram

i am beginning to think it is my mobo, i really hope its not the cpu, as its the most expensive part i have, and the returns for the company i brought it from sounds shoddy, i am gonna arrange to send my mobo back to the well known company i got it from, hopefull with fingers crossed this is the problem. i dont want this experience to stop me from building again. oh one more thing if i have windows 7 installed on the mobo will i be able to istall on the new one, i aint paying for it again.

managed to order one of these tester for £4.86 not bad considering what i have spent on the rest of the build, atleast if it is the mobo or powersupply then i can replace it easily, the company i got the cpu from seems to be a disaster lol

Right everything is sorted now, got the new testing tool and it turned out to be my psu, had blown sometime during installation, got a refund for that and the motherboard, oredered an Asus M4A79 Deluxe, which is awesome and also an improved Corsair cx750w psu, everything is working fine thanks to help from you guys, my 1st build is now operational and i am chuffed to bits, better than i could have expected, big thanks to everyone that replied.
