Urgent help needed before I RMA my CPU!

Hey folks, sorry for the stupid title. Needing a bit of advice as I am stressing out here.

I ordered brand new parts just over 2 weeks ago, An Asus X99 Deluxe motherboard, 16GB of Ripjaw DDR4 RAM, Intel 5820K cpu and a GTX 980.

The day after receiving it all, my motherboard failed on me and I had to RMA it with overclockers.

The issue was that it would not start at all, when pressing power, there was no response from the motherboard at all. After a lot of testing I narrowed the issue down to it being the power input for the CPU. My PSU was completely fine as I tested a second PSU and also my PSU in another PC.

It was received at Overlockers on Wednesday 23rd and then after a lot of calls to the RMA department and even raising to managers and even higher than that due to an issue with the RMA being refunded and not replaced (It was a finance order), the issue was sorted on the 29th and my new motherboard has arrived today.

The issue I now have however is that when trying to boot my system, it just, won't... I have narrowed it down to being the CPU and I suspect that it has been caused by the failed motherboard and has broken the CPU also.

When trying to boot now, the system starts up, but when the CPU is installed, no fans will spin (Except from a brief 2 second spin from the CPU fans immediately after pressing power on) and nothing shows on my displays, this is even when the GPU seems to be running without any issues.

When the CPU is not installed, the fans all start and continue to run and the motherboard's CPU LED warning light is on, which is what you should expect.

Now my thought is that the old motherboard has fried my CPU and I feel that I will now also have to RMA this, but that then means that I will be even longer without my new PC and this is a massive issue for me, due to needing the PC for loads of different reasons, some including work.

Would anyone have any advise for things to try before I send this back, or is this the telltale sign of a dead CPU?

visit asus website and download the latest bios for that model mb,put it on a usb stick and flash the bios

I think you can do it without it booting into windows/working, through usb, read mb manual on how to do it

then once done try powering up the pc

its very rare for a doa cpu

everything worked before? same model mb?

any red cpu led or dram led light up on the mb?

checked carefully/closely for any bent cpu socket pins?

Everything was working fine for the day before the motherboard originally broke, had been playing games and everything.

There is no LED indications at all when the CPU is installed, only when not installed.

There may be a bent pin on the new motherboard, to the left of the socket, however I can't see too clearly whether there is or not. Gonna try and source a magnifying glass.

If it isn't a bent pin, would there be anything else to try? Thanks for your great help so far :)

Does it power up if you remove the graphics card? or rather have you tried with another one?

Did OCUK confirm that your old motherboard was faulty? if so why didn't they want to send you a replacement and is it possible that they just sent your faulty motherboard back not wanting to send you another one?

It is the same if the graphics card is connected or not. I have also tried my old graphics card just in case.

The old motherboard was definitely faulty yeh.

So the stage I'm at at the moment is that either the CPU is faulty, the replacement motherboard is faulty, or they are both bloody faulty...

EDIT - A refund on the motherboard was put through by mistake. After being on the phone a while, they managed to get it sorted and replace it as what was to originally happen.

EDIT 2 - It was definitely a new motherboard too as I forgot to return one of the accessories and the one sent arrived with the one i forgot.

I see.

What power supplies have you tried? make/models?

Also if you suspect there is a bent pin I'd check that first, some people find that photographing the socket and viewing zoomed on computer is easier.

My main PSU is a Be Quiet BGT L7-730W and the other one I tried is a low powered OCZ OCZ400SXS 400W PSU. Not ideal for the other one of course, but it is all I have to test.

try and take a close up pic of the whole cpu socket if you can

any error code on the mb led clock if it has one?

its very hard to tell from those pics, you need to try and do a closer pic

could only see this one that looks slightly out of shape

the pins might be fine im just assuming,i think the best way is to rma the board again and see,it could be the cpu but its rare they play up

I don't see any severely bent pins, there's one top left corner of the socket which looks like it might be a little out of line but that might be the lighting?

edit: yeah that's the one wazza marked.

Are you putting the memory in the slots recommended by the manual?

Yeh I think RMA would be best, and just RMA both CPU and Motherboard, however this is yet another week without my new parts and is a bit of a nightmare...

The memory is in the recommended slots, yes.

EDIT - Unfortunately I can't really get any better shots than that, my phones quality is crap and the camera I have only has the canon 50mm 1.8 lens which is crap for close up...

If it makes you feel any better, I had exactly the same problems. Got everything up and running and then on a cold reboot, my Asus X99-S and 5930k failed to post. There were lights on the mobo, but nothing. Narrowed it down to the mobo being shot and RMA'd it.

Got a new mobo and CPU back (they were on the same invoice, so RMA'd them both) and same issue. Just some lonely lights on the CPU and nothing else. So have RMA'd the mobo, CPU and RAM this time, which was on a different invoice. We'll see where I get and whether it's third time lucky...

Feel for you as well Spot, it ain't a good start to X99 and 2011-v3 so far :(

I am at work all day today, and will have to wait until next week now to get this sorted. Will RMA both CPU and Motherboard and hope that it will be sorted then.

Worst case scenario is I return CPU, MOBO and RAM and just purchase an older motherboard for my old set up and use the GPU with that (My old motherboard died, hence my reason for upgrade.)
