Hi all, so I managed to get a virus by installing some dubious software... (Yes I know, well done me...)

Rebooted into safe mode, ran Malwarebytes etc, it cleared everything up, and then booted back into normal Windows again.

No browsers are working, I can't load any web page (though weirdly Bing search works)

They work in safe mode with networking

Inside and outside of safe-mode I can ping all websites

Wireless adapter settings and ethernet settings still seem to be using their defaults.

Any ideas?? :)

Win 10 x64

Would it not be safest to format at this point? At least you know your machine will be properly clean then.

Probably something in the virus has inserted itself in the chain for networking (modifying system files, etc.) or changed settings to proxy traffic, etc. which is now broken by the virus removal - best thing to do is torch the whole lot.

Tried system restore and it failed, but that was an issue I already had unfortunately.

I'd really rather avoid reinstalling Windows again there's an awful lot of software tied to it, some of which I'm not sure I have the codes for anymore.

Could be worth trying a Winsock repair tool but I don't think that is supported the same in 10 as it was in XP-7.

I did a winsock reset and an ipconfig renew and a few other bits. Checked ipv4 settings etc.

It worked for a few seconds then stopped again.

Steam/Instagram/Skype/etc are all working. So it's specific to browsers and loading Web pages.

Install Veeam Endpoint Backup. Take daily backups from now on!.

I have it, and a server for the data to be stored on. Unfortunately the server has been broken for a while and I havent yet fixed it. :p

In any case my data was fine. Just the OS install on C: was borked.
