urgent help needed please

the problem i have is..... when i switch my pc on its starts for about 5 seconds then shuts down then restarts then shuts down etc etc. if you keep your finger pressed on the clear cmos button at the back its continues uptil you let it go then it goes into the cycle of start/stop/start,
it never gets into the boot screen so i have no fault codes or anything to go on.
how can i tell if its a mobo problem or a cpu problem?

Could be a memory problem, remove all sticks bar one and see what happens then try the others.

hi and thanks no its not that,. tried what you suggested still the same.i'm still thinking there's a problem with either the mobo or cpu i've recently had the cpu out and thinking either ive screwed up the cpu or the mobo. rather than just replacing 1 and finding out its the other i was wondering if there's anyway of telling exactly which is the problem.

As you removed the cpu you could have damaged some of the pins, is it possible to remove the cooler and cpu and check.

I would be surprised if the cpu is faulty.

hi thanks again i've had a look as best i can but i think i need a magnifying glass those varmits are so small to see it seems there maybe 1 sticking up higher than the others would this be enough to cause this type of problem?

Quite possibly - have seen this before. What you really need is a magnifying glass on a stand which is adjustable so that your hands are free. You definitely need to check the pins very carefully to eliminate this as the problem. Let us know how you get on.

ok mark got my magnifyer now. can you tell me what is the best way to see the pins. i've taken the mobo out, i have a spot table lamp pointing directly on it. looking at it from the top doesn't seem to give a true picture. on a brief exam from the top it does appear a couple of pins might be bent but i really need to get a better view of it before i do anything?

many thanks mark. it will be a couple of days before i get round to it as am on nights and need my good eyes on. if i do run into problems i will ask again but either way i will let you know how i get on.

just to finish the thread off and give an update i found several bent pins which i managed to straighten gently but more problems in that some pins were actually missing so i think i'll have to invest in a new mobo.

can you tell me what is the difference between the ga-EX58-ud5 mobo and the ga-EX58-UD3R?
what i'm thinking is now that i have to buy a new mobo and the UD3 is about £50 cheaper. will i get the same things with this mobo. i'm led to believe this mobo superceeds the one i have.
