Hi guys,

When I do things on the PC that put no strain on the system, like using the forums the PC is ok. But when I put a bit of strain on, like running a virus scan I get a little high pitched screech for about 2 seconds then the PC just goes off and restarts it's self...

This has only started happening today, it's been fine ever since and I havn't changed anything on it, not put new drivers etc on.

I thought it might be my hard disks, so I downloaded western digital's tools to check the disks, but I can't load the program because when i try and load it my comp just goes off ^_^

I've finished a virus scan without it restarting.

I thought i'd try and do a scan disk, the pc keeps freezing on 66% on " verifying file data" stage 4 / 5. i've done about 6 scans and it keeps freezing on the same place.

What does it sound like thats causing this problem? A currupt file, or a hardware problem ?

Any help at all will be much appriciated, ho ho ho :p hehe

Sounds like your HDD is up the duff, if your useing xp turn off auto restart when the computer crashes, then at least you can see the BSOD and see what msg it throws up.

I've just noticed another thing, i've got one of these TST files in the root of each one my hard drives :\

How do I turn auto restart off?

There's an option in the BIOS "power on after power fail" .. is that it? >.<
In Windows...
  1. Right click 'My Computer' icon & select 'Properties'
  2. Then 'Advanced' tab
  3. Click on 'Settings' under 'Startup and Recovery'
  4. Disable 'Automatically Restart'
Sounds like HD to me. Mine was doing the same, see here :(

A quick google says its a test file for some programme, but cant see how it should be that large

Thanks for yer help guys! :D

Yeah that file is pritty large and it's on every hard drive in the root.

I've disabled that auto restart, i'll crash my pc now and see what info it gives me on the BSOD.

I get, BAD_POOL_HEADER

and lots of numbers at the bottom, and the usual jiberish in the middle.

EDIT: I looked up bad_pool_header on google and found this http://www.tweaksforgeeks.com/BAD_POOL_HEADER.html

It says near the bottom of the page that the indexing service can cause that BSOD, and recently i edited the indexing service with some new code i got online...

umm

Just fixed one thing.

That high pitched noise i was hearing was my data cable on my storage hard disk, it was loose and was macking that wierd noise... you get the idea :p

At least my drive isn't making the scary noise I thought it was.

Just leaves me with one problem now, WD tools restarts my comp, i'll try and fix that now.
