Just borught a new graphics card and cpu. An X1950 pro and an X2 3800 to be exact. They both installed fine, plug and play, all wonderful. Was playing around earlier and noticed the cpu wasnt actually showing up as a dual core, but just as single. confirmed this with some proigs which show only 1 core was working. So I updated the motherboards bios. This fixed the problem, the cores now both work, cept since then my graphics card doesnt.

It started basically as Error Code 43 showing up on the device manager icon. Then with much google trawling I found out theres a problem between vista dual cores and graphics. With further trawling I found out the latest ati drivers I installed have problems with this graphics card. So I downloaded the last recommended ones, the 7.7 I think, and downgraded the error from 43 to now a simple "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" EWhich is also unfixable. Everything was fine on vista before all this :( Anyone any ideas?

those dont work. god I hate this kind of thing :) It looks like there are 3 options. Disable a core, get a newer mobo, or install xp. none of which I want to do

It's more of a case of what weren't you meant to do which is upgrading to vista from xp rather than doing a clean install.

It seems that the best thing to do in your case though if you don't have a full license is just to install xp again.

sorry I missed the above. I didnt upgrade. it was a full fresh install on a virgin hd.
does this problem only effect upgraders then? What on earth is there that causes problems with agp and dualcore in an upgrade that doesnt in a fresh install?

Actually now I cant remember if this version is an upgrade or a fresh install. I might have just plowed over xp. Would it def solve my problem if its a full install?

ok will give it a wipe and reinstall then. I dont want to go without Vista now I learnt to love all its new features.

Try going back one BIOS update. The newest one might be problematic?. (Just throwing ideas at you as I'm kind of stumped). Also for Vista you should get the latest 7.9's I'd imagine.

Damnit lol. spent this morning installing XP!

What happeneed these days to dual booting? Last I remember it was impos. or do you just need a seperate partition?

just install xp then vista on another partition...i have and it works fine even tho i never really use vista but to play mahjong

ok tried. Reinstalled vista and isntalled the latest ati driver and the optimizer. Still says device wont satrt cause of an error.
