firstly thanx to any one who can help me.

i have an old pc from a customer of mine who wanted a new hard drive fitting as they only have a 10 gig drive. Sounds simple but then the problems started.

its an IBM motherboard but have no idea of model number etc only thing i can get off the board is - IBM FRU09K9982

when i connect the hard drive its not detected in bios and neither is the existing cdrom drive which is connected via another ide cable.

so i cant boot from either drive, i know the hard drive is ok as i part installed on my own machine and its a new hard drive.

ive tried different ide cables and changed the jumper settings on the back of the drives but with no success the bios still not detect it and therefor will not boot from either drive.

its starting to bug me now.
please help .

Try checking the BIOS first, maybe the setup is not properly done for the mobo... you may need to define the settings for the Hard drive. Or, you can remove the battery on the mobo (when the power has been removed from the back of the PC) and wait 15 seconds and put back the battery and reset the computer.

If that didn't help, I guess you have to search the web for a installation manual...or phone IBM to send you one - if it is still supported.

with the 10 gig drive it booted into there existing windows install ok, wondering if its a limitation of the bios not supporting a big drive as the bios is 2001 ?

Bios will not limit it, although the settings in the bios maybe the problem. Also the Hard Drive itself may not be compatible with the Mobo...best to check on the manufacturers website.

I used to have a socket 370 P3/Celeron Mobo many moons ago, and a similar fault plagued me for upgrading. Because the hard drive was unable to work on older ranges like my ole 370 (oh gawd such memories ;)) I decided the only solution was to dump it and get a new computer.

I suggest phoning IBM for advice on compatability/upgrading the motherboard with the new Hard drive...other than that, I can't really see a way to fix it...maybe someone else knows :s
