My computer had a complete failure. Happens quite often for me :(

I'm running Windows XP Pro for reference sake.

Anyway after the Physical memory dump I restarted my computer. With the options of safe mode and normal mode etc I choose normall. This has happened to me many times and I had no reason to assume my computer wouldn't work. It got to the Windows XP loading screen. After a few minutes I got a pop up saying "E:\$BitMap" was missing, this was the message.

"The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of computer hadrware or network connection. Please save this file elsewhere"

I clicked OK only to be confronted with several more of these. Lots of different file names in a moment of panic I didn't write them down. I know stupid of me.

Anyway I restarted thinking some magic would happen and it would work.

Again the options of safe mode normall mode and no matter which one I tried none of them worked. I got this message for all. Windows is corruput or something to that effect and this was the solution given.

"Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption then restart."

I booted into my windows disk for recovery console and did the CHDSK. It scanned with no errors. I then typed "DISABLE" I don't think this actually disabled anything but rather just gave me info on the command. I can't be sure of that but I would assume you need to type something after "DISABLE" to choose what you want to disable. Anyhow it looked complicated and dangerous so I thought another restart since I have done the CHDSK might work.

Anyway it has. Windows has started with several critical processes missing. I now Have 20 Processes running rather than my usual 29/32. I have no windows task bar and can't get one even after executing the run command on explorer.exe through Windows Task Manager.

The only reason I can even get on to type this is through a firefox shortcut on my desktop. Obviously some things are working but the bulk of my system Isn't and I'm completely stumped. I really do not want to formatt.

Please help!

you could try a system restore to before you had the problem. i am sure you can activate the task manager and run the program from there. Someone else here will probably get into more detail for you

Your better of starting from scratch. save all data you want some where safe and reformat. If you can't save the files cos windows is so borked, reinstall windows using the save file structure, then copy files across to a separate hard drive then do a full reinstall. I fond once you hit a problem like that you'll keep having niggley problems till you reinstall.
