Hey, at my grandads, just installed a new motherboard, cooler and graphics card...

Fitted it all in, went to start it up, and it powers for like half a second so the fans just started to turn on, and then it turns off.

I took everything out keeping barebone stuff in, still didn't work, pulled out all the connections for the power reset LED's etc, apart from the power and it worked. So i put the computer on the floor, went to connect it to the monitor, tried to turn it on again, and the same old thing happened.

Dont know what to do... Any suggestions?

Spec:

Gigabyte

M52l-S3P
Phenom X4
4gb DDR2 Ram
ATI 5770
Artic Cooling Freezer 64 LP

Thanks in advanced

Have you plugged in both the 24 (20+4)pin and 8 or 4 pin connectors to the motherboard? have you plugged the pci-e power into the gfx card?
Is the CPU fan header attached to the motherboard?

Any warning beeps? Do you have a speaker connected?

Some cases don't have them but it's easy to connect one from an older case. BIOS beep codes can be helpful.

So it works when only basic stuff is installed, 1 stick of ram, HDD, Grfx Card but as soon as you connect the Monitor lead it doesn't work again? Disconnect the monitor lead from the monitor but leave it connected to the PC, try again. If it works then try another monitor lead. Maybe the lead is shorting out the graphics card or something. Maybe the graphics card is shorting itself out once it forms a connection to a monitor.

Can you tell I'm guessing?

I know this is a simple thing but - is there any crap shorting the mobo on the case - are the spacers all in etc - v basic but sometime causes an issue like you describe.

Short circuit to the board? Reset button stuck? Loose connector? Reversed polarity connection?

You can check the heatsink fan by disconnecting it. Only run for 10-20s max in this case. The mass of the heatsink will protect the cpu from overheating in a short time.

Worth a shot atticusfinch.

I'm a lil unclear on what is what. So the system booted up when you only have the power button connected to the header. Did you then plug in the other connectors thinking it was sorted? Maybe you have the polarity wrong when you plugged them in, mobo can be fussy about that.

You also haven't stated what the CPU is, there is a slim chance that it is not compatible with the board or the board needs a bios update to support it. If you give us more detail on the spec and the steps you took after you got it to boot we can help further

Ok, Im guessing it was a short circuit, Its one screw, when I screw it it (motherboard to copper tube) it doesnt start up, but when its out it works perfect, so in the end I just decided to leave it out, I had the board out a number of times and there isnt anything underneath it, dust or metal etc, so i really don't know what it is.

Thanks for all the replies, Very helpful, I did try what most of you suggested :)

Strange. If you feel you'd like to have the screw in place you could try adding a plastic washer between the motherboard and the screw, although it could be shorting underneath so you might need one there too.

Glad you found the root cause though. Now try and fugure out why a screw to a standoff would short out a board when, after all they are designed to sit on those things.

People rarely use the washers anymore. Could be the screw making contact ontop of the mobo.

You can make washers with a hold punch, find a magazine with a thick front page (pcformat for example) then hole punch it like crazy. Those lil circles that collect in the hole punch will be your washers. Just poke a lil hole in them and the screw will slide through.

Happy to help, glad your now on track ;p
