Having one of those days....

Just got a new Corsair HX650w PSU today and plugged it in to the computer. First boot was fine, but i shut down to adjust the voltage on one of my fans because it was too loud (Xilence red). When i tried to boot again nothing was happening, so i flipped the switch on the PSU a couple of times and booted again. After about 2-3 seconds there is a nice glow coming from below the CPU accompanied by a lovely smell. I thought maybe i had used the wrong 4pin EPS12V cable (since it has 2 that combine for 8-pin mobos) but i double checked and it was all correct. From what i can tell it looks like one of the voltage regulators around the CPU area on the motherboard has fried itself :( I'm not sure if it's taken anything else with it, but i really hope not.

What do you guys reckon is the cause, faulty PSU or a failing VR that's been pushed over the edge by the new PSU?

I'm going to need a new motherboard either way, so i'd also like a recommendation for a new 775 board. It doesn't need to be anything flashy adn tbh the cheaper the better since i will be upgrading to Sandy Bridge at the end of the year/early 2011. Until now i've lways had good experiences with Gigabyte products, so i'd be inclined to go with them, but open to any suggestions.

TIA for any help.

Thanks guys, i've since gone over the PSU with a multimeter and all rails are reading correctly so it appears the motherboard just decided to give up the ghost.

I guess i will give the GA-P43-ES3G a shot since it's in stock, as long as i can get ~400fsb i'll be happy until an upgrade.
