Changed CPU over to a Q6600 on motherboard, system would just flash for 1/2 second and not boot what so ever. Thought it was PSU so swapped to my old Silverstone 600w psu. Pressed start and POP something exploded/flash and after scaring the living dayligts out of me the system started !!

Now plugged in my old PSU and everything seems fine!!

MSI P6NGM mATX
OCZ 520w
2gb Ram
E6300 now Q6600

Whats going on?

Did the pop come from the Silverstone PSU (flash/sparks etc) - and if it did had you used the PSU's switch at the back of the unit to power it on/off when fitting?

As for the reason that it now works perectly fine with the existing PSU - it could be simply that, initially, some of the MB connectors hadn't made full contact with the MB. You may have rectified this when refitting the original PSU.

Spark definatly came from motherboard. The capicitors look fine on the board but one of the square rectangle chips things on has a chunk missing from it

TBH i'd either replace the chip on the board (probably very very hard) or get another 775 board as you've just bought a new chip.
