Hi all,

Im currently on a trip trying to fix a failed Domain Controller but cannot re-add it to the domain.

I get the message

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "domainname" The specfied user already exists.

I have removed the server from AD users and computers and replicated with the other dcs but still get this problem.

I then went a step further and followed the guide at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816907(WS.10).aspx to remove the old metadata but still getting the same problem.

Any ideas?

Cheers all

Ahh,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I was hoping I can use the original name because many applications are configured for that.

Is this not possible and likely I will need to rename it?

AD will probably still have the server's SID in it's database, you could try creating a new SID? (google NewSID)...

*Perhaps read up on the repurcussions of changing the SID first.

Done it!!! Thanks to those who replied!!

It also took a me going through DNS and removing any entries manualy and going through ADSI Edit and deleting any entries. I then finished up with a Force Replication and drunk tea for a hour. I tried one final time and bingo!! it worked.
