Hi,

My system wont start, or rather it powers up to start then turns itself off. Its an overclockers system, several years old now with Q6600 overclocked, Ibit IP35 Pro XP Mobo, corsair 650 PSU and and upgraded fron the original MSI 6850 graphics card.

The mobo C1, then C3 then begis cycle up some numbers before reading 99 and shutting down. It tries to start up when power is delivered rather than waiting for the start button to be pressed. I took out the main bundle of leads that goes into the mobo and replaced and then it didn't try and start up immediately but when I pressed the start button it still did the same and shut down within a second. When the power is on there is a red light just above where the big set of leads plugs into the mobo but I admit i'm not sure if thats normal or not. I know almost nothing about hardware, and little about software really when it goes wrong.

Its a work computer and I had bucket loads to do today so am stressed.

It has doe this before and eventually turned on OK perhaps over a year ago, no idea why or if I did anything. Ive removed the power supply for a while etc to no avail. All the fans are moving freely and its not too dusty in there.

Any ideas.....

Nick

Ok it seems in order to get it started I just needed to write a pleading post!!

Still if its happening at some point it will happen and not start probably, something is plainly not happy so any ideas still very much appreciated. The MOBO now reads FF, the red light is still there but there is a green one right next to it that only flashed when it was turning on.

I'm verging on a new rig, maybe its time to hand this one to the kids.

Can only find the PC manual, If I have the MOBO manual it will be deep in the loft with the system box, I will have to find it if it happens again I guess.

Would love to spec a new rig, its starting to struggle with new games not that i'm a resolution whore but its nice when its pretty!

Work do a tax free salary sacrafice scheme most years, usually just before xmass for some reason!, for computers and similar electronics and the deals are pretty good and some of the systems are a decent gaming spec, it would be hard to resist using that even if I would prefer a more bespoke or OC'd system. If they don't do It and I'm in the market I know where to go.......

Thanks

Hmm, because half the people with that motherboard with the error 99 coming up, seems to be a thermal issue or PSU, in quite a few cases, the heat-sink has come loose.

You could also bet the thermal paste has disintegrated!! Try running Real Temp and see what your CPU is hitting. HwInfo is a good one too!

Well its happened again, though is now working again, its either quite simple or very complicated.

the simple version is I just noticed the 'on' button on the top of the antec 900 case seemed a bit depressed, though I hadn't noticed this yesterday, and turning it on a fiddling with the button a few times eventually worked when the button seemed to come to the top properly, could just be concidence though, and would this explain the error code which is 9.9. and just means 'power off' apparently.

Ive found a thread about incompatability between the IP35's and some PSU's specifically the corsairs. Here is s quote from 3 pages into the thread. The whole thread goes back and forth between PSU problems MOBO problems, incompaaibility, memory, volatges and all sorts with no definitive answer, though the quote below seemed to be the most definitive.

Regarding the power supply issue. I had fallen prey to this issue and after much discussion on the message boards that included Abit reps and a representative from Corsair, all we could determine is that, despite their inability to replicate the problem in their labs (believe me they tried a lot):

the Abit IP35 Pro (and probably other IP35 boards, I don't know 'cause I wasn't paying attention to that) PLUS a power supply that has more than one 12v power rail, such as the Corsair HX and many others at the time MAY combine to cause the problems you are having.

The reason that the issue was soooo hard to diagnose is that sometimes changing the PSU would fix the problem. Other times changing the Mobo fixed the problem. And sometimes neither fixed the problem.

So all Abit, Corsair, and others were able to determine is this:
1. The COMBINATION of (a) the IP35 Pro mobo AND (2) a power supply with only 1, high-amp 12v rail worked every time; and
2. The COMBINATION of (a) the IP35 Pro mobo AND (2) a power supply with several 12v rails with lower ampage tended to work for most people, not work us unlucky folks, or work for a time (weeks, months, even years) then stop working. The strangest thing of all, however, is once this problem surfaces, it will not go away no matter now many times you replace the PSU and/or Mobo UNLESS, when doing so.... you ensure to meet the requirements in COMBINATION No. 1, above.

So the fix: Replace the PSU with one that has a single high-amp rail such as those made by PC Power and Cooling (the 610 silencer did the trick for me). Or... replace the Motherboard with another, non-IP35 Abit board (not ideal since a new Mobo will require drivers different than those already installed on your boot drive and render your Windows installation unstable at best and unbootable at worst).

I literally spent months hammering this out with experts on the Abit boards... hopefully this "solution" can spare those of you having this problem the same ordeal.

loox

So back to the on button if its that, can this be replaced or do I have to get a whole new case, cant see how just that component could be replaced and have a bit of a look, the button is on top of the case along side 2 USB ports another port two jack points and the reset button. I gather from the thread the wire from the reset button can be swapped with the on button though as a diagnostic and I guess permanently if necessary, I would get someone else to do this though REALLY not good with hardware generally have 10 left thumbs.

Here is the thread;

Any suggestions welcome, I will put everything I need onto this laptop for the time being and see how it goes with the switch. Cant really see after 3-4 years how the MOBO and PSU would suddenly not like each other.

Any comments welcome

PSU's can degrade and deliver less over time, theoretically if your problem is as you suggest and your PSU was only just stable then... by now maybe it is not.

Other than that, what are your temps?
