Urgent insight needed for avid flight simulator fan

Yes, you should be fine. However, I understand that FSX is much happier on NVidia graphics than AMD for some reason, so if you decide that you gt640 isn't up to it ;) then you'll be better off looking in the NVidia direction for a replacement.

I have recently started to purchase my components. I opted for an i5 3570 ivybridge, geforce gt 640, 8gb crucial ballistics sport ram. Can anyone give me an idea of what motherboard and psu would be best? I'm thinking cheap but good quality. Also a hard drive that would be compatible? Thanks if there's any other components I've missed I'd be ever so grateful if you could list them too.

Power supply?

Quick question guys these are the parts I've ordered/ am ordering....i5 3570, gigabyte z77 d3h, geforce gt 640, zalman z9 plus, ballistic 8gb ram, western digital 500gb hdd, and a 24x DVD rewriter. Can anyone please recommend a reasonably priced power supply that would be suitable ideally the cheaper the better but still of decent quality that its not going to cause me any problems? A quick response would be greatly appreciated because I could do with ordering it tonight. Thanks in advance

Don't open the 640 GPU send it back. Even a 2nd hand 1GB 460 (~£50) would be much better than that GPU.

Total : £529.93 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Get the "K" CPU for the Z77 to overclock. I've added a good value heatsink so you can OC. FSX is more CPU dependant so the faster the CPU the better. I gave up on FSX, it's such a faff as it needs tweaking to get running well. I play DCS A-10. It's hardcore if you want it to be, cockpit is fully interactive and yes you can use the MFD to target and watch your maverick missiles hit home ;)

Ordered all my bits...are all these components compatible? Please ;)

Zalman z9 plus
Corsair builder series 500w cx modular
Gigabyte z77 d3h
Sparkle nvidia geforce gt 640 1gb ddr3
Intel i5 3570k ivybridge
Toshiba 1tb hdd Sata 6.0gb/s 7k1000
Crucial ballistics 2x4gb ddr3 ram
Samsung 24x DVD rewriter
Creative sound blaster audiology 7.1

Thanks in advance :)

P.s I realise the graphics card is a bit pants I'm working on changing that one :(

I own the Z9 Plus, great starters case but I would have bought the USB3 version. It has a proper side window and obviously the USB3 ports......the U3 wasn't available when I bought mine ;)

Everything else is fine, other than the GPU which we have covered and the soundcard isn't needed. I would have put that cash towards a heatsink to OC the CPU

SB was completely useless. If I were you (tight budget), I'd buy used non-K CPU like i5-2300 which I've got my own, B-Grade motherboard like this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-273-MS&groupid=595&catid=689
(good for o/c, and if bigger cash comes around, I'd upgrade CPU to "K" series)
and picked up much better graphic card. You've done not 75% CPU - 25% GPU set up, but 90%-10%, sorry. Do you think details are textures only ? It's AA & anizo quality, too which works faster and better @ quicker cards, I'm afraid you won't be able to use AAx8 & FXAA with single GT640 to keep decent framerate which would be probably good for any GeForce (not AMD) card with 1.2-2 GB like GTX 560Ti/2GB or 560Ti-448 worth 119-129 in B-Grade parts.

There's no noticeable (or price-wise) gain from CPU speed over 3.6-3.7 GHz (i5-2300 is able to reach 3.4 GHz easily with BCLK 103), so it's no point to buy "K" processors at all for FSX. Plain i5's with higher multiplier are completely fine, with no need to use BCLK change, just turbo & o-c (+5) adjustment. I've mentoined I5-2300 because it's incredible cheap, for about 60-70 pounds an Ebay (used). This + no SB = gives money for better graphic card which allows using AA, and presuming you play in FullHD 1 GB VRAM is a minimum for this. GeForce works better than AMD card in FSX, but GT640 is some bottleneck - people say about 99% usage of GTX 470, so you've got some comparison :)

:( this is agony...

I've just received the final 4 components this morning. Potential problem with the corsair cx500m... It came in retail box as new with cellophane, I opened it up to inspect and I'm not sure but the atx 24 pin cable already attached to the psu seems to have one of the silver inserts for one of the 24 pins missing, all the others have a silver area inside them but one of the holes is just black. Should this be the case? If not is it a problem and will it stop it from working. Thanks for everything in advance guys. Ad
