Hi all

Just broke my 34in 1440 165hz LG ultrawide. FFS

I have a 3080 10gb with a 5800x3d. Mainly playing marvel rivals, warzone and diablo4

Should I go for something like an oled alienware Alienware AW3225QF and turn down some settings/use dlss if the 3080 struggles...

Or do I go for a 1440p oled instead.

Would a 27in be too small compared to the 34 ultrawide I've been using? I am happy to step away from ultrawide as I tend to only play fps shooters.

Very confused, please help, I need to place an order ASAP.

Thanks

I'm looking at monitors at the moment. From my research I've narrowed it down to the XG27AQDMG for a 27 inch 1440p monitor. Seems to be a great monitor for the money.

Is the 3080 going to struggle at 4k?

On a 5080 now but my 3080 handles 4k just fine depending on what you're happy with FPS wise and settings and of course what games you play (I play marvel rivals and diablo 4 and both run great on the 3080 maxed with dlss performance, also run fine on dlss quality + balanced but may as well use performance mode given iq is still superb and you're getting a big fps boost)

I came from a 3440x1440 display and surprisingly 4k was just a better experience from a performance pov since you can use dlss performance mode and get better iq + performance than dlss quality at 3440x1440 and given how good dlss 4 transformer is now, you could even use ultra performance. Of course going forward now with more and more games using more demanding RT effects and poorly optimised ue 5 games, you may have to on occasion drop settings too.

It really does depend on what you're wanting to play, modern AAA games and even some AA games (frankly, almost anything running on UE5) are generally going to struggle even with upscaling, unfortunately you're going to be V-RAM limited in more than a few scenarios. If you manage expectations and are happy to turn certain settings down alongside using DLSS you should be alright, it's not a setup that I'd be happy with personally but we all have different requirements. With esport type stuff and the games you've mentioned I imagine you'll be alright unless you're wanting to chase high framerates.

You can get some good deals on 34" OLED ultrawides if you look around in the £500-600 range, 3440x1440 isn't as difficult a resolution to run as 4K but people can find ultrawides a bit marmite.

Thanks guys, this is the exact quandary I'm in and I literally keep jumping between them. I'm mostly playing marvel rivals ATM, I don't play AAA single player stuff.

So I'm torn between going with the 1440p 27in and knowing I'll get 150fps and above with the 3080

Or going future proof 4k, and living with hopefully 60+ fps, and reducing settings which i can live with...

Literally stuck lol

if you get a 4K monitor you'd need to upgrade your system, or use DLSS/FSR. Or accept you'll get lower fps, or stick to older games where 4K isn't such an impact.

I'd only go 4K for a large screen ie 34"+

A friend of mine has been gaming at 4k for many many years and I had always stayed with 1440p.
However I did go for a 4k 32" Acer when another retailer was selling them off cheaply. At the time I had a 3070 GPU.
I was happy enough with the performance but I was VERY impressed with the desktop usage and general game usage, like the UI etc.
I have a 4080 now but I was very happy with the 3070 at the time and would not wish to go back to 1440p once I adapted to a 4k display.

This depends upon the games you play and the amounts of VRAM they require.

4k on a 27" monitor is very nice. The high pixel density can obviate the need for some post-processing techniques. Further, the high pixel density makes text look a LOT better on 4k OLED monitors
