URGENT ROUTER HELP...

Conntected a computer running Vista to a Netgear ADSL+Router via ethernet. This worked fine, connected to the internet no problem.

Then configured another computer to take its internet from the router via a dongle, this worked fine - but then the first seemed to lose the internet connection.
I then tried "setup new connection" only to be told it was already connected, and it that when I clicked "browse now" from this menu the connection worked.

I then made the wireless LAN selective so that only approved computers could connect, and turned encryption on.

After this the ethernet connection to the first computer stopped working completely but Vista insists that it has a working internet connections. Multiple "repairs" didn't solve it, multiple restarts, multiple "disable device" didn't solve it...

Please help

Have you tried rebooting the router?

Also check settings in router see if its actually connected to the internet and check if your pc has a valid ip address

What adapter are you using please post details as to make and model. Are the drivers for the adapter designed for Vista ?

No, I shall.

I've used the testing software and it says that it IS connected to the internet (although whenever I open IE it wont connect to anything) also, I think the router IP address has also stopped working...

How do I check whether my PC has a valid IP address?

Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

Your problem could just be that you don't have an IP range set up in the routers DHCP settings. ie you're only allowing the Router to assign one IP.

I've reset the router and the same problem happens... I cant even get into 192.168.0.1 ....

I'll try what you suggest tonight

Do you have the manual for the Linksys?

It's a netgear, and no, the manual and troubleshooting website didn't help. I think it may have been a ethernet driver issue but either way I've actually reformatted the computer now. It works okay, but I'd love to know what was wrong...

I'm going to attach it to a computer, then stick two ethernet cables in the router and hopefully it will work

Ah, the link you put in is to a Linksys BEFSR41 router, not a Netgear.

Anyway, glad you got it working OK.
