US ipad ok?

iTunes will work, but you won't get full access to the app store (on the device) until the UK store is fully iPad enabled (on launch day).

You will also need a UK plug adaptor.
 
I think the warranty is a really grey area, nobody seems to be able to give a definitive answer as to whether the warranty on the ipad is international or whether a US warranty is US only, I've been told both personally. To the OP, can't you just wait for the UK launch? It's only 11 days after all!
 
Yeah it is a bit more expensive here than the US but you have to bear in mind that the US don't pay VAT, they pay sales tax, which I'm pretty sure is only 10%. Having said that, if you convert the US price into pounds sterling and then add VAT it comes out to £406 so we are still paying a £23 premium, but then you have to factor in shipping costs, warehouse and distributor costs etc, so I think the price is pretty fair. Much fairer than the prices some other companies charge for their products here compared to the US!

maybe but work it out , apple has already paid distrubution cost etc in the us or the us one , and for a fair comparison you would need to remove the us sale tax at 10% before adding out 17.5 , so really we should just be paing 7.5 more , also the shippings costd to me is a crap area , as there all made in china so they could ship direct for china to the uk and save on shipping costs to the us

US prices don't include sales tax as it varies state to state, so adding VAT on top of the US price is almost exactly right for a like for like comparison.

Exactly, so when you factor all that in it isn't that bad a price. I think they could have marketed the entry level at £409 but it's not like £20 is a major deal on something that costs £429 (not for me anyway). Hence why I don't think it's worth buying a US model now that we are so close to the UK launch. When they were first released I can understand buying one from the US, or if you happened to be over in the US recently, but now I don't see the point. I guess the only downside is that you would have to wait until the second batch of pre-orders on 7th June when ordering one online, but you could probably walk into an Apple store on release date and pick one up, I'm sure they'll have enough to go round.

I think that with the fall in the exchange rate this week, there's no compelling reason for me to buy in the US next month. The only decent saving now is on the 64gb version which is too rich for me!

Unless the pound goes back over 1.50 I'll wait until we get back and then grab one from the store. Heres the spreadsheet I have been using based on the current exchange rate of 1.40 and assuming 8.5% sales tax minimum in the US :-9

EDIT: Formatting is a bit cack, but you can see the final column which is the important one. I need a minimum saving of £40+ to make it worth my while buying out there and risking warranty / customs issues. Otherwise its not worth my while.

That's a good £75 off, so providing the market doesn't dive again (yay for elections, Greece etc) then I'd still say to go for it.
 
If you are already going to fork out £620, surely an extra £70 for the warranty piece of mind and not having to pay overseas shipping isn't too much of an issue?

  1. Warranty is global on Apple products (once it launches in the UK).
  2. £70 is £70.
  3. He'd be buying it in-person, so wouldn't have to pay shipping.

hmm, the sheet was based on 1.40 to the pound, which is ambitious at the moment anyway. Tourist rate is always 3-5c below the market rate.

I wont be spending that much, sweet spot for me is 32gb with or without 3G and the savings on that aren't worth it now IMO, given there is no consensus that I have seen yet on warranty..
