Hi all,

Does anyone know if there are UK based agencies that recruit for US jobs? I'm really keen to work in the states but everywhere I look it's a minefield. I have a bachelors degree in computing and now have around 3 years or so of work based experience. From my understanding it's generally quite difficult to find something there especially for someone with limited experience like myself.

The two options I really see of perhaps getting something there is either by studying for a masters or being sponsored by a company that is also based in the UK... Ideally a recruitment agency would be good, even it was just a year's internship or something like that.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

I looked at moving to the US a couple of times, basically the only real way is to be sponsored by a company, unless you have a ton of cash and an existing business - in which case you can do the entrepreneur visa (or whatever it is) or you marry someone/whatever.

The recruiters I was contacted by for US jobs were all US based, who knew "the system" but I never pursued any of the roles as it wasn't convenient at the time.

Right now I'm in the games industry and the company I'm with basically just press a button and you can relocate to Los Angeles if you want to - they take care of 80% of it, logistics, family, housing - provided you pass the VISA eligibility checks etc.. Bearing that in mind, it seems that the best way is to try and get a job with a large American company - chances are at some point, if you want to relocate it'll be far simpler.

Hi Screech, may I ask what you do? I'd love to go work in America, and about to do a conversions masters in Software Development. Mind telling me a bit of story of how you got into the games industry?!

Pretty simple really, I wrote a lot of tech stuff, did some seminars, wrote blogs, spoke to lots of people - got poached by them unexpectedly, that's all there is too it really! I had no idea that i'd ever end up working in the games industry, as I've mostly spent my life working for ISPs and network tech vendors, so it was a nice change - turned out I had specialist skills they needed, so it was an easy entry into the industry.

Who you with? Game dev is a great industry for mobility, massive shortage of skills and relatively niche so all the big studios will relocate.

Nearly moved to one of our studios in Canada a couple years ago, but decided to stay here.

Loads of non-game specific back office tech roles too...
