My GF form the US is here and we need a way of getting the electrical stuff to work.

I have a US to Uk standard cheap adapter which works fine for my US Laptop charger and a couple of otherthings, but here hair drier & straightener, battery charger, and my new Ipod don't physically even fit into the adapter I have.

The problem is that some of these plugs seem to have 1 peg which is extra fat, or has a fatter tip which wont fit in the socket rpoperly. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

What adapters work with all US plugs? A europe wide travel adpater would actually be useful anyway. Can these be purchased from a typical high street shop?

It sounds as if you're getting at the fact that some of this other stuff has a third prong in its plug, two flat ones about .75 inches apart and a thick round one below. That third one is a ground. I imagine that you could pick up a decent one off the Internet with ease. If that's not quick enough try going to a luggage store. I bet they'd have good ones.

That said I'm not entirely sure that you'll be able to find a cheap one that's beefy enough for the hair dryer. Hair dryers tend to use around 1500 Watts of juice and it would take quite a converter to manage that.

You need a converter, not an adapter.

US voltage is 110v , the UK (and W.Europe) is 230v.

Most low end hardware won't be able to work on both (laptops may have the necessary inner gubbins), and could fry.
