Hey guys,
So on this system i have which consists of a Gigabyte GA-H61N-USB3 motherboard,As soon as i insert a USB drive into the USB 3.0 on the rear the system just instantly turns off and is an absolute nightmare to get to switch back on again, usually requiring completely disconnecting power by plug or turning off switch back of PSU/remove CMOS battery etc.

Any idea whats causing this issue?

appreciate any help.

Possibly a damaged USB port? I had a laptop where a USB cable that was plugged in was yanked side ways in the port, damaging it. After that, whenever I plugged something in to that port the system instantly switched off and wasn't too keen on turning on again in a hurry.

If you're using a port at the back of the PC on the motherboard, might want to check the tabs around the port on the rear IO panel are properly aligned and not interfering. I believe they can cause short circuiting issues.

If the power off happens regardless of what you plug in then it's highly likely the port is damaged and inserting a device is shorting the contacts. PSUs have short circuit protection, which is why the system turns off.

I would strongly recommend not trying to use that port again. The PSU's short protection isn't instant or infallible. Every time the PC cuts out you run the risk of damaging a component, and if the PSU's protection circuit fails then the PC is likely to die permanently - possibly with a small plume of smoke to keep things interesting (I've had this happen, and it's not fun).
