Am thinking about an msi GS 40 or the equivalent gigabyte model.

Both have this port... Is this the same as thunderbolt?
I'm really wanting a laptop that will take one of the new external gfx card docks when they arrive... Just in case I need more power in the future.

Anybody got either of these and thoughts? Reviews seem good but just hot and noisy.

Not necessarily. USB-C is just a physical port shape, it can be USB2, USB3, Thunderbolt or theoretically something else underneath. The MSI website says that there's a Thunderbolt USB-C port on the GS40, but as far as I know Gigabyte have left Thunderbolt off most (all?) of their newest Gen models, so the USB-C ports on those are just USB3(.1?).

Thanks art for clearing that up. So I really need to be looking for specifically 'thunderbolt 3' as opposed to just type c.
Wow this is getting harder again. I know razor and alienware have amps... Msi soon.... Is there likely to be anymore from the likes of gigabyte Asus etc?

Yup. No doubt some people have been burned by that, I don't know why they didn't clarify it properly.

No idea, I would have said no but AMD are setting their own standard, which makes me wonder if they'll be a bit more popular than I'd thought. I guess it really depends on how long it takes TB3 laptops to fill the market, and how many people are happy with something which only has GPU power when it isn't on the move.

The 14" MSI GS40 has a GTX970m so out and about you have some gaming ability.

I'm considering this solution also. Waiting to see what docks are going to be available when pascal is released.
