For most external drives I just use a standard OTG cable.

Yeah you just need an OTG cable. There may be limitations due to power supply etc.

One end like this. Seems an adapter is the way to go though.

That is the USB 3 version of the micro usb cable. As the port on most android phones is the USB 2 variant of micro usb there is no point making a usb 3 to usb 2 micro usb cable as the extra pins on the USB 3 end have nothing to connect to.
