USB 56k modem?

Hello my dad has a serial modem which he needs to use for work and he uses it on his laptop with a serial-usb connection, he then has to use a big fat adapter.

So basically very messy and a bit of a bother to have it in the laptop bag, is there anyway I can get a 56k modem which just uses the USB port for power and connectivity?

Does the laptop have a PCMCIA slot?, if so, there are still plenty of PCMCIA modems out there.

im sure you can get USB modems or ExpressCard slot modems?
