Not sure if this counts as nitpicking but this problem used to be the same on my old PC and my new PC.

When the computer is shut down, the lights to my external hard drive, controller and anything else that is still plugged in still lights up.

It's annoying having blinking lights on when I forget to disconnect things. Is there a way around this?

Thanks,
Matt Wilde

Pull the plug at the wall :/

it is usally a feature of the board so that you can charge your devices when it is off, just look around the bios and turn it off :)

As has been said there may be an option in the bios to turn off standby USB power (you may need to turn off "wake on" USB and possibly keyboard under the power settings menu*).
With some motherboards I think the standby power to USB is or was controlled by a jumper on the motherboard (I'm sure the Asus P4P series had a jumper for this near the rear PS2 and USB ports), but I'd guess with modern boards it'll all be done in the bios.

*As it needs power to the USB ports to wake on USB Keyboard/mouse.

Thanks, I'll look into this shortly.

Small pieces of insulation tape over the bulbs works :)

Used to do that when I was a teenager as the lights on my TV/DVD/VCR(!!) used to do my head in at night, so I 'stealthed' the lights lol

That way, you don't need to worry about turning off any useful features or unplugging anything... sorted :D
