USB bootable Linux based OS for accessing hard drives

Hi guys forgive my lack of knowledge on Linux .but a few years back I used a bootable CD with some form of Linux on and was then able to access my hard drive which had some issues .

Can anyone recommend something like this I can run of a usb drive ?

Ok so with this I can boot into some form of os off the usb drive and not actuality use the hd at all for the os but access it ?

Do you have a link. I want to boot on a usb drive and then see if I can access the files on a HDD

yeah I have a ubuntu USB stick in case Windows OS fails or I want to do a proper temp files removal- Windows does not always do this it still leaves lots of files in temp folders
