USB bootable Linux based OS for accessing hard drives

Hi guys forgive my lack of knowledge on Linux .but a few years back I used a bootable CD with some form of Linux on and was then able to access my hard drive which had some issues .

Can anyone recommend something like this I can run of a usb drive ?
 
Most Linux live booters will mount drives automatically. Or can very easily with the right kernel module.

Grab the Ubuntu one for starters.
 
Ok so with this I can boot into some form of os off the usb drive and not actuality use the hd at all for the os but access it ?
 
Yeah. When you make a Linux boot disk you can try or install Linux to your hard drive, Try means you can mess about with it without doing any permanent changes as it'll be using the boot device as the OS.
 
Well any Linux distribution will do what you want really. Ubuntu is a common one for people fairly new to Linux. Download it from their website, burn to it a boot device, and change boot options in your bios.
 
Personally I find Linux Mint much more like Windows ran Ubuntu is. So for someone not used to Limit that might be better. It come in two flavours; Mint Cinnamon and Mind Mate. For this type of thing either would be fine.

It is based on Ubuntu but with a more Windows like environment.
