Hi peeps,

I had a mates PC over the other day to clean it up and add extra RAM. He wanted all the stuff uninstalling to tidy it up and start afresh.
Did that no probs, then connected it to my internet (via LAN) to install updates etc.

He's now got it back home, reinstalled his Tiscali software, connected his modem via the supplied USB cable (LAN not an option on that modem) and it won't connect now. He's contacted Tiscali who have confirmed his username/password, he say's it shows as connected but won't load any page.

Just wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue here? Going to have another look at it tomorrow but would appreciate a heads up. :)

Thanks

In IE / Internet Options / Connections ... is it still set to "Never dial a connection" because that's what's used when you have a router, but with a USB modem you will need "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" or "Always dial my default connection".

Thats what I thought  Geeesss...

It connected to the internet fine before the clean out. Not sure if its being given an I.P address or not. You'd think logging in using the username/password would work?

What does the connection status window come up with? (double click that little icon in the taskbar with two small squares, or alternatively go to control panel-> network connections)

OK, not got the PC with me right now
Could it be that because I connected it via the LAN card (when I updated it), that it's "changed" the settings and is thus confused by a USB BB connection? I hate USB Broadband connections anyhoo.

It shouldn't do. As above, make sure IE is set to 'always dial connnection', so that it asks for your user/pass to connect. Might be worth taking over the latest drivers for the modem as well.

Update on the problem.
Did all that was recommended here - still wont display a page.
Rang Tiscali support and was on phone half hour doing various tests - they confirmed the line was working, did various "ping" tests that were successful.

To recap - when you select the Tiscali Icon on the desktop, it loads up the conenction box, connects, accepts username/password and says in notification bubble that you are now connected at 2.2MBPS but get an error when trying to browse any web page. Service status in our area is fine.

Tiscali exhausted all their diagnosis and said its due to either a firewall (none installed other than windows) or Antivirus - NOD32, which was disabled while trying all this. Or a current Virus on the system.

We've now reinstalled windows on the system and it still wont display a page after reinstalling Tiscalis software. They seem to think it's a virus causing the issue, but surely not especially after a clean reinstall.

It worked last week, all we have done is reinstalled programs and then windows, and reinstalled Tiscalis software.

Any thoughts, 'cos I'm at a loss, other than trying another browser?

any particular error or just the server cannot be reached ??

"did various "ping" tests that were successful" you did or they did? :P

Well y'know, run>cmd then entered what they told me to. lol They said it was all successful. :D

The error says "IE cannot connect to the webpage" and changes contents of the address bar to "http:///"
Think in the status bar it flashed up DNS error while it was trying to connect to the page.

Tried the diagnose connection problems link and that just says contact your computer administrator, unable to identify the problem.

You broke it :p format it again :(

does this work? http://216.239.59.104

Is this IE6 or 7? Might be worth taking IE7 over and installing that  as above though it just sounds borked.

Will try that out, or rather get my mate to as I back home now. :)

What does it mean if the IP address works opposed to an actual web address?

Edit, no that doesnt work either. :-S
