My wireless headset went pop and it seems it's the battery that is done for. I've had it a while, so understandable. However, now my Xbox controller battery has died and I only had that maybe 3 months.

Could my USB ports have caused this, or is it more likely to be coincidence?

Some boards have like 3/4X etc charging speeds etc so can maybe throw to many amps at the battery to charge safely/correctly.

Err, not that i know off, the specs for the board will tell you which ones are fast charging, but I suspect they all are these days.

Generally I have always found the fast charging ports to be coloured Orange rather than the blue of USB 3.0, not sure if that's a standard as such but something I have always seen.

Get a USB Doctor, you will be able to monitor how much current is your device pulling from the port and you can compare that to your device charging specs whether it is being charge too fast.
