Hi all,

Please check out my sig for my system spec!

Im having an odd issue that has starting happening over the last month or so (nothing has been changed in the meantime that could relate to the issue).

I keep getting a USB Device Descriptor Failed error in Windows 10, and when this happens the unknown device also appears in the Device Manager with the error message.

Even when nothing is plugged into any of the USB ports I still get this error randomly pop up, weird thing is that everything is working as normal and all USB ports seem to be working just fine. In terms of USB devices I only ever use my Afterglow Prismatic Xbox One Controllers and also my bluetooth USB receiver for my Logitech K400 Plus keyboard.

I have ensured all drivers are up to date and have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling all of the USB drivers with no luck as the error crops back up.

I tried reformatting and reinstalling the system from scratch but the problem still keeps popping up which is now making me think its possibly a hardware issue (I have had some rather strange issues with this build since the start and spent quite a bit of money identifying and sorting some strange problems).

I have done my research and tried various methods appearing online but none of them have worked for me, although some of them have sometimes held the error off for a few days to the point where I thought its fixed, then it just crops back up out of nowhere!

Like I said, other than the error displaying itself the system works exactly as it should and all USB ports work just fine even though this USB device descriptor error keeps popping up, it happens randomly and nothing to do with any specific USB devices.

My thoughts are now that its either the motherboard (this is currently my second one) or maybe something to do with the USB hub built into my Gamemax Falcon case? (but the ports on both the case and motherboard seem to work just fine).

Even though the system works just fine and its just a petty error causing no issues whatsoever, its really getting to me!

Appreciate your thoughts and any ideas for me to try on this before I start throwing money at the system, which I really dont wanna do as would rather put money towards a new build!

Got this with my Corsair K70 keyboard, was when I had the second, unnecessary connector installed.

Thanks for the quick reply mate.

My keyboard only has 1 bluetooth usb connector and its working just fine, really have no idea whats causing the problem especially since I have reformatted and started from scratch. Happens even when no USB devices are plugged in.

Thinking its either the USB hub built into my Gamemax Falcon case or maybe the motherboard itself, surely this cant be a software issue considering I have reformatted?

Might try replacing the case first to see if the built in usb hub is the problem as that will be the cheapest option and can always re-use it for the next build...

Any help is appreciated!

Oh dear. Well I reckon its driver and USB related.

Can you find drivers online for either the case or the motherboard? Any updates for your chipset etc or even a bios update?

You should be able to unplug the USB header from your motherboard to see if it's the case too, so I'd do that before buying a new one .

I have all the latest drivers installed so pretty sure its not that. I unplugged the USB header from the motherboard and put it back in and the error has not appeared again....yet....we shall see!

No error since disconnecting the USB header from the motherboard so I assume the USB hub built into the case was the problem.

Im on the lookout for a new case, someting that will suit the following parts:

i7 4790K with Corsair H80i v2
Gigabyte Z97-D3H (v1.1)
16GB (2x8GB) Corstair Vengeance LP
2TB SATA 3 HDD 3.5"
Palit GameRock Premium 1080 Ti 11GB GDDR5X
EVGA 750W GQ PSU

I was looking at this Phanteks case: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/phan...se-noise-dampened-white-window-ca-045-pt.html

However, it makes mention that GPU clearance is 280mm with the HDD tray/cages installed whereas I think my 1080Ti is 285mm in length?

I dont really want to spend any money on a smaller sized hard drive or SSD so just wondering if theres any way that I can have both the 1080Ti along with my 3.5" hard drive installed with this case?

If not, would really appreciate if someone can recommend a few nice windowed cases that would suit all of the above!

Appreciate your help in advance :)
