got a saitek p2600 gamepad , and xp is refusing to recognize it giving this message
USB Device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it
it works in another pc, so short of reinstalling xp, what is there to do? i have tried many registry tweaks that people have suggested that have not worked.

tried all usb slots also. the computer is fine with everything i connect via usb, just not this gamepad.

its driving me nuts, spent all afternoon with this . :(

thanks

Have you installed any drivers for the pad yet? Windows should prompt you for them when you plug the thing in. Maybe you could try installing them, then plugging the pad in.

The drivers are found here

the webpage states they are not WHQL (tested and approved my microsoft), so if you have installed drivers off of a disk (in which case they may be the same as found from the linky I just quoted) its possible windows has decided to use a generic driver instead which is WHQL (I have encountered this occasionaly). In which case, try manually installing the driver from the link above.

it doesn't get that far , the gamepad is not getting any power , and the drivers wont install until i have the gamepad connected.

there aren no drivers for this device installed. i thnik the problem is of a lower level than a problem with a device driver. :(

in device manager under usb controllers, there is a ' unknown device ' entry also.

i have tried removing all usb controllers , still no work

sorry dogoid, not sure about this one then. Can only recommend downloading the driver for the link i posted above and install it before plugging in the gamepad, then plug it in and try it.

its not going to work because the drivers wont install until it detects a connected gamepad the problem is with USB controllers prob , its not a driver issue.

even without installed drivers the gamepad still should light up ,as it did on another pc as early as the welcome screen.

im stumped, no idea whats wrong here. :(

Read an artical about Vista Updates kills USB (April).

Some others claim its a Windows Defender update.

Either way, I have no issues.

another guess is that maybe the pc you are trying to install it on is old and is usb 1.1 not usb 2? Grabbing at straws here mate im afraid

have you checked to see if the HID Input Service is on

Goto My Computer> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Services>

listed as HID Input Service make sure its turned on and its set to

startup type: Automatic

do any of the usb ports work on other devices

also check in the bios to make sure there on. also look for usb keyboard
supported if its listed

also have you installed any usb drivers from his mobo cd,as some times that
messes up the MS usb drivers in sp1+

usb port{s} works fine with my phone .

all usb drivers are microsoft standard drivers.

i may add that i did a windows repair install earlier today too. thought that would have sorted it.
