I've just built a new PC and get this error message on boot up. I can't even get as far as being allowed into the bios.

Motherboard is an Asus P5LD2 SE
Core 2 Duo 1.80 Ghz processor
2gb (2x1gb) Kingston memory
7300GT graphics card
Seagate 250gb SATA drive

usb device over current status detected !!
System will shut down after 15 seconds

Any ideas what could be causing this?

As it says 'usb' in the message I've unplugged all usb devices (front panel usb plugs etc.) and still get the message.

Thanks

Check there isn't something like a bit of tinfoil stuck in the rear USB ports? I once short circuited a USB port by plugging my flash drive in, having failed to realise it had a load of tinfoil stuck in it :p

Failing that, remove the motherboard from the case and try booting caseless? Might be something on the back of the board.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the replies.
I can't see any metal or tin foil in the usb ports.

The bios is a few revisions behind the latest so I'll see if I can update that. Otherwise I'll take it all out and try running it out the case as suggested - I assume it's ok to do this then? :)

Unless you have one of these sitting about:

:)

lol no don't have one of those!

I decided to go for the out of case option 1st.

I've got it on my desk, on the motherboard anti static bag (I assume that's ok?), turned it on and I still get the same message!

Updating the bios is a pain using a boot disk but I guess I'm going to have to?

Just thinking about it, how will I actually get it into dos to update the bios when it won't do anything or allow me into the bios to change the boot sequence etc.?

have you checked the USB extension header pins on the motherboard? and the jumpers that they usually have next to them? could be one of them has got bent and causing a short circuit.

Just out of interest, how are you turning it on when its out of the case?

PK!

I was just about to post saying I think I've sorted it. I took 2 jumpers off what I thought were the pins I plug the front usb ports into.
Well I just put those jumpers back on and it didn't come up with the message.

Just putting it all back in the case to see what it does now.

I had the motherboard etc. on the desk but still used the case power switch to turn it on

Glad to hear it, you can just use something to join the pins together like a screw driver to boot the PC.

Thought it might be something like that, I hope its the end of your troubles.

Now I know its sunny here in Warwickshire today but thats no excuse for taking jumpers off! :p
