I have been trying to get a usb dongle to work at work so I can use external broadband for gaming.

Anyone have any success with boosting the signal of their dongle through either custom or bought methods?

Appreciate any sharing of advice or ideas

Thanks

lol gaming at work, I want your job! :D

In terms of boosting, I have only ever seen mods made to routers (senders) and not the receivers (dongle/pci card). Routers can be modded with bigger antenae or modded from omni-directional to directional by way of foil screening ('cantenna'). Some custom firmware allows you to boost signal strenght such as Tomato which may help matters.

I've seen an external aerial for dongles. It's basically a clamp on bit that goes on the dongle itself (each model dongle has a slightly different place to position the clamp) depending where the internal aerial is and an high gain antenna. It's about £25.

Yeah Im attempting a cantenna type aerial but its not having much success, it just looks wacky lol

I know this can be very effective as daft as it may seem. You may get even better signal if you place some curved foil around the router antennae also e.g. cut open pringle can.

Crude but effective! :D
