Look for "bus powered" in the description if you want them to be powered by your laptop, and not to need an extra power supply.

How can i find out if the laptop has a USB 2.0 or a normal USB port.

If its not USB 2.0 can i make it 2.0 via software?

It'll be in Device Manager under usb tree

No, its a hardware thingy, it's likely that stuff will still run on a 1.1 port, just possibly a bit slower

In the past I have used a IDE/SATA to USB cable to connect HDD's and drives to my laptop they can be had for £5

Can these be used as external? Via some case with a USB?
