Hey all, wasn't sure where to post this so here goes.

Mate has got a top end USB sound card, that he uses for recording. It's a motu I believe. It draws so much power from the USB that you can't have anything else plugged into the USB ports at the same time.

Would a pci usb card work? Will it draw from the same power?

USB is rated per socket, 500mA at 5V I think. So, a pretty negligible 2.5W. Some usb devices need more than this, and connect to several sockets. As such, if connecting a sound card to one of them stops any of the others working, I'd think the motherboard or the soundcard is faulty.

A pci usb card may work around this, but I'd personally want to find out where the fault is.
