Hi all, im trying to connect a Xbox 360 for Windows controller to my HP Laptop. Everytime i connect it, i get a balloon at the bottom saying the device cannot be recognised and has malfunctioned. Im using Windows 7 x64, i know this is not a problem with the Xbox 360 controller as i can connect it to another windows 7 x86 pc perfectly.

Ive tried installing the driver software for the controller first, then connecting the device, and the other way round, tried connecting first then installing driver software. nothing seems to work though

Also ive tried uninstalling and removing all usb devices, even changed the power scheme options , for some reason its not picking the controller up and is malfunctioning.

Anybody got any suggestions i can try? All my other USB devices work flawlessly, and as said the Xbox 360 pad works on another windows 7 pc perfectly.

Thanks in advance :)

This probably isn't much help to you since you most likely don't wanna go down this route, but: my boyfriend had that happen on his Windows 7 32-bit laptop, even when there was nothing connected to it the computer would whine about the port having malfunctioned. Formatting + reinstalling Windows sorted it out.

if the device works in other computers and the usb slots powers other devices then its most likely software (os/drivers/configuration) rather than the hardware

You could try plugging it into a powered Usb hub to rule out power issues from the laptop Usb port.

all usb slots dont work, but i tried as someone suggested connecting a usb hub and this has worked.

it just seems strange that it wouldnt work in an ordinary usb slot on the laptop!

thanks for suggestions anyway :)

it is likely that your laptop isnt producing the required power and the usb hub is
