With these headunits with usb on the front, would it be possible to have it linked to a usb hard disk? just thinking it might be an alternative to having a dvd burnt with mp3's, would be faster to change track and wouldn't have to keep on writing new dvds as the others get scratched. Cheers

Possibly, i have one with usb on it and use a 2gig stick, you could try a usb drive but im sure in the instructions they are limited on what they accept. Some will differ though, so its possible yes.

You need to check the specs of the head unit (although some head units will do more than the specs say). As a general rule, yes you can, but there might be a size limit, and it might only work with certain drives if it’s a drive thats going to get the power from the USB bus (ie drives that don’t draw much power). I believe LaCie drives are supposed to be good for this. In my opinion though, if you are getting a head unit with front usb, you would be better off with a large capacity memory stick, and if you want an external drive, you should get a head unit with rear usb.

you'd be best off with a unit that has the USB running from a cable at the rear of the unit and plugging a hard drive into your glove box like i intend to, i recently purchased the Kenwood KDC-W534UA unit and am very pleased with it, only got a 1 gig stick in it atm though, but 160gig USB drives are reasonably cheap nowadays :)

ive used a lacie 8 gb micro drive, there called carte orange, and they come in orange or black, on ocuk it has a little built in lead wich isnt a problem for me as i have a little cubby hole thing i can put it in and the lead is long enough, plus it comes with a rather tastefull extension cable so you can plug it into the glove box.

I would personally stick to a 1GB stick or 2, they are cheap now and browsing 18 albums can take long enough!

Mine i got a cd head unit with auxilary, get a 2 way 3.5mm jack cable and attatch your mp3 player, or in my case a laptop :p and play that way
