USB host controllers failed?

Hi guys,

I have just put a new build together using a Asus H81M-K motherboard. It has 4 USB's at the rear that all seem to be working correctly. Whenever I boot the computer though I am shown the error

'Device driver software was not successfully installed'

Standard Enhanced PC1 to USB host Controller:Failed
USB Root Hub:Failed
Standard Enhanced PC1 to USB host Controller:Failed
USB Root Hub:Failed

In Device Manager under USB they are all listed as working correctly but under 'other devices' it shows SM Bus Controller and 3 unknown devices. There is no USB devices plugged in other than the keyboard and mouse.

Anyone got any ideas what these errors could be referring to?

I would suggest getting the latest chip set drivers and USB drivers from the manufacturers website and install them, see if it clears the errors and the unknown devices.

had a look and it does have USB 3 ports so you may need the drivers for them to function properly.

you can get the drivers from here

Thanks ED209, I actually had already tried all those drivers, it says successfully installed and to restart to complete installation. When rebooting it freezes at starting windows (the logo doesn't appear) and I am forced to reset. It then boots up and gives me the same error :confused:

ok, might be worth trying to clear the cmos and if that fails see if there is any updates for your bios at all.

under Universal Serial Bus controllers in device manager do you see any USB 3 controllers at all?

should see USB 2 and USB 3 in the list

Mentioning the BIOS, I went into it and changed the USB setting XHCI mode. It then booted up and successfully installed. It still says there is an unknown device though despite only keyboard and mouse being plugged in... Check the pic

Update: Managed to manually install SM Bus Controller but the unknown device is still listed.. should I just ignore it?

No problem, glad its getting a bit closer to getting it sorted.

if you disconnect the mouse and keyboard is it still there?

only other thing is if you have your USB 3 drivers still extract the zip file to the desktop

once done right click on the unknown device and then go to update driver software.

click on Browse my computer for the driver software and browse to your desktop and look in the extracted folder. if no folder names have been changed it should be like this below

C:\Users\xxxxxxx\Desktop\Intel_USB3_Win7_VER30141\Drivers\Win7

pick the version that suits your OS, X64 for 64 bit and x86 for 32 bit and then press next. it should try and install the drivers if its the correct driver

press finish and see if it installs anything
