I've had a long term problem with wireless mice and keyboards working reliably from a distance. I now always use a wired keyboard at my desk. But find wired mice very annoying that I just wouldn't want to use them.
Due to the fact I have my monitor on an arm, i often extend it and watch stuff from much further back, so also have another wireless mouse and keyboard. I however noticed a problem with my USB 3.0 hub that when ever I plugged my hard drive in, the mouse and keyboard became unusable at a distance of over 1 metre. Why is this? It is nothing to do with power as I have a USB tester and the voltage stays at 5. I've always noticed problems getting USB 3 hubs to work nicely with wireless things.
For the past few years, I got a USB 2 hub just for my mice and keyboards and have it just under my desk and this doesn't have issues as it doesn't get anything else plugged in. However, when I tested my hard drive in this, even though it is a non powered hub, this didn't mess up the mice and keyboard, but does limit the performance of the drive due to the USB spec.
My cheap 2.0 hub has started buzzing and I'm wanting a very cheap replacement. but 2.0 hubs are harder to find and I don't seem to be able to find any these days that have a detachable cable. They usually just tend to have stupidly short cable attached to them and I want to avoid using extensions. I regret getting rid of an old 4 port hub I had that had mini USB!
I may be able to find something suitable in time, but the main thing I want to know is why USB 3.0 messes up the signal, but only really when more devices are connected to the hub.
