Usb mass storage devices not working XP

As title really - bought a used lappy with xp preinstalled. The USB ports work (mouse etc) but none of mass storage devices(hdd, pen drive, sd card in card reader) work. The devices show with an ! Next to them in device manager

Any tips? IBM x31, windows xp.

Uninstall the current drivers and install the latest updated drivers.

sorry, which drivers? USB in general, or mass storage drivers. If the latter, any chance of a link to some?

Pug are you running XP SP2? It should either work or go looking online for drivers but not just automatically dump them in device manager with an exclamation mark on them!
