usb mouse cursor only going up and down

hi

i'm a bit clueless when in comes to I.T, i brought a usb mouse recently and when i connect it, it will work for a couple of seconds then the cursor refuses to move across and only goes up and down. i tried updating drivers but no good i have tried on both xp and vista machines. i sure theres no fault in the mouse itself as it powers on when connected to the usb port of the machine

where am i going wrong ?

Try it on another PC first, just to ensure it's the mouse before going any further.

yup

sounds faulty, should work as a normal mouse without any drivers

take it back

Sounds silly... but check there isnt a hair on the laser or something. My mouse was playing havoc for weeks until i found a hair in there.
