You're gonna have to give us more than that to go on!

You mean whenever a USB device is connected, it gives the device not recognized error? It's likely to either be a chipset driver problem, or a physical hardware fault, but with a lack of information it's quite hard to say.

My friend with the problem posts on a hi fi forum i use and he posted this.
QUOTE all of a sudden none of my usb ports work anymore , im running vista and have done a lot of digging around on the internet and cant find a solution it looks like a pretty big bug , has anybody here encountered it and if so did you manage to solve it?

That's all the info i have Memphis thanks for your reply much appreciated. ;)

I had a similar issue using XP where it said the USB device had malfunctioned and was not recognised. I figured out it was the USB ports on the case. I disconnected from motherboard and fixed.

Thank you for the replies guys much appreciated.
This is how it stands atm QUOTE

done a clean install and its still the same . i plug in a usb device it says USB device not recognized one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it.
This applies to all 3 usb ports and whatever i try to plug in.

I look in device manager and it has unknown device listed , if i try to update the driver either automatically or by looking in c:windows it says windows has determined that your driver software is up to date. if i look in the the properties for the unknown device it says no drivers are installed for this device...

download the slax linux iso and see if the usb devices work in that

try disabling in bios
restart
let it go to windows
enable in bios, restart

Some PC's do not have enough USB 2.0 ports only a mixture of USB 1.1 & USB 2.0 ports. If you plug certain USB 2.0 devices into a USB 1.1 port it can give you error messages in Windows also be aware that some USB devices require powered USB hubs as they draw too much power and thats another popular cause of USB error messages.
