USB on Dvd recorder

Should the USB post on a dvd recorder be able to be used for playing back video files or is it intended for other purposes?

My recorder is Chili 9200HX

Thanks for the info guys.I have been trying to play a 5.1 ch avi file with it resulting it sound going of and on.I finally yesterday tried it with a 2 ch avi and it played perfectly.What would make it play one and not the other as it is capable of playing both from disc?

Thanks for your comments,i know this isn't top of the range but £200 was my budget.

Looks like i will just have to put my 5.1 stuff to disc and just play 2ch stuff from usb.
