USB or Soundcard

trying to choose a set of headphones for myself

Is it better to get USB ones or the usual, plug-in-your soundcard ones

I have the SpeedLink Medusa SL-8790, and am in a similair position. Only it is not what sort of connection but what is best way to connect them to my X-Fi platinum,via the rear socket of throught the box in the front. At the minute my gripe is lack of voulume, haven't even got round to trying the microphone as my new logitech web cam has one in it.
