USB / PCMCIA

Hi all

My mums friend wants me to setup wireless for her (with AOL sigh) That’s fine, she already has the Netgear DG834G router but on the laptop there isn’t any lan connection. The only thing I can think of is that I use either a USB adapter or PCMCIA card. And connect to the router that way.

Which would be better? A USB adaptor or PCMCIA card?

i would use PCMCIA as i've always thought USB taxed the CPU more.

Yeah thats what i thought + she only has 1 usb port on the laptop

Question:

Since she doesn't have a lan conection and ive not setup the router yet , when i install the pcmcia card can i configure the router via the laptop?

depends on the default security setup of the router, i presume it would be unsecure meaning it should find the wireless network and then you could connect to the router e.g. http://192.168.0.1 for example.

Yup its all default atm old admin / password jobbie as its AoHell i wont install the software and just use the username + password then cha cinng ... i hope.
