I'm trying to figure out the best way to run power to a SwitchBot security camera (used as a baby monitor), via ethernet.
Essentailly I want to connect the USB power supply to a UPS in another room and run the power over ethernet to the required location. The camera's power requirement is 5V 2A.
I've tried using some cheap USB over ethernet extenders but the camera is unstable on cables over 3m.

What's the next most cost effective option?

If your objective is to have back up power for the camera in the event of a power failure, could you not just find a power bank that will charge while being charged, plug that into a USB 240v charger and the camera into the power bank and use that?

I did consider that. Problem there is most of them blip the power when removed from the mains. Those that don't, are not managing the charging and are not designed to be left continuously connected to the mains.

when you say USB over ethernet, you mean dongles at both ends of a ethernet cable? So literally the old USB extenders?

If so then you probably are looking at the wrong thing and might actually be better with a PoE to USB splitters e.g. this type of thing

You could then power a PoE Switch or injector via your UPS, and then the above will pull out USB power from a standard PoE connection (and just leave the network connector unused)

Brilliant!
I looked at a PoE injector, but the voltages are too high. This is the ideal solution.
Many thanks :)

Ah right, gotcha. But it seems that Armageus has given you a good solution! I did wonder about that myself, but was a bit puzzled as to how to step down the 48-56v PoE.
