Hi,

I have a device, that connects to the usb port ...only just bought it and tried setting it up on Friday night on my laptop, dell i7 it's a few year old. Anyway I hear windows usb chime when plugged in, the device lights up but after around ten seconds it powers off.

Tried reinstalling software but to no avail.

Connected the device up to my work laptop and, whilst I can't install the software it does the same as on my laptop, it powers up then powers back down. Dell laptop.

On the laptops usb mice, keyboards etc all work as expected.

Spoke to the company that produces the device today and couldn't get it to work, however, after a frustrating few hours I decided to plug it into my desktop and lo and behold the device powers up and stays powered up.

Now I thought usb by there very nature were standard so power output should be the same laptop to desktop? Or is it something else?

Now my problem is I can't use the device connected to my desktop, it's too far away from where I need to work.

Is there anything I can check on the Dell laptops to see if the device is picked up or if any security software is blocking anything - anything really as I can't justify buying a new laptop to see if it'll work or not.

Matt

There's a Windows power option that you can tweak to have the USB ports powered all the time. USB Settings > USB Selective Suspend Setting. Try that just to see.
