It really does exploit quantum phenomenon to generate theoretically "true" randomness instead of the psuedo-randomness you get from a traditional computer. It shoots single photons at little semi-transparant mirrors a little bit like the quantum eraser experiment. Pretty cool.

I'm sure that must be quite useful for some applications in cryptography where it's useful/necessary to have the source of the randomness be quite local - I'm not going to pretend I know exactly what those situations are, though.

Forget using a 1000 euro USB stick, if you want truly random (and as a physicist I do know that this is definitely 100% random) use radioactive decay, or just use the hotbits API.

Semiconductor breakdown noise should be pretty random provided your receiving amplifier and sample-hold circuitry is well shielded. Not perfect I'm sure but orders of magnitude cheaper!
