USB-related problem with the in-laws' PC

Hi all

My in-laws have BT ADSL and I went round there to install (or try to) a new 'Home Hub' that they've been sent. This is basically an ADSL modem / router.

The problem I have is that there's always a yellow '!' in the device manager, and I cannot get the system to recognised the device. I have been through the entire setup CD and it's told me that the USB drivers have been installed successfully. The error in the device manager is 'This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10)'.

Previously, their internet worked ok via a 'SpeedTouch' 330 modem, but they were having problems with disconnections at peak times, hence me trying them on the home hub. After trying and failing to install the Home Hub, I then tried to get them back to where they were before I started. However, whenever I tried to install the drivers for the SpeedTouch modem, the PC restarted itself!!?

Can anybody guess as to what is going on here? Why can I not get the PC to recognise the Home Hub and why does the PC now restart itself every time I try and install the modem's drivers?
Other info:

- OS: Windows XP with all updates
- Connections: phone port--> filter--> home hub--> PC (via USB cable)
- They have a very old Hewlett Packard PC, for which I've since upgraded the HDD and memory

Many thanks for helping me achieve in-law brownie points!

This may sound strange, but are they on 32bit or 64?

The only reason I ask is that I have seen the same error code today after installing Vista 64 on a machine for somebody (from 32bit). I can't get the sound playback device working, "this device cannot be started" - or something along those lines anyway. :(

you should be using a lan cable for he home hub i assume its the black one ?

remove the ! in device manager (uninstall it)

you should be able t ouse the cd but those black hubs come configured to the phone line so need no setting up all you need is a lan that works on the 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 (router is usually 192.168.1.254 by default)

the other problem i would ignore until you have lan configered correctly... if you need help it would be best to post issue in networking forum

good luck

Thank you startrek2.

I've Googled the BT hubs and their hub version is a 1.5, the white one with both USB and Enternet connectivity.

I've only tried USB so far because their PC does not currently have a network card (!) however I have a spare one lying around upstairs...so would you say that I should install this in their PC and try connecting the hub to the PC via Enternet instead?

Many thanks!

if like the black hub the usb is only for add on (media etc) not for connecting.

certainly use lan/ethernet to connect adsl this like i said works on phone line/number ie it allows a bt bill payer online with no setup.

so simple terms plug hub in hit reset let lights get working,, then plug lan cable boot pc

it should all be working out of the box..

the password for wireless is on the base/back it should really be that simple

remove the ! from device manager once you have bb working you can look at it again

good luck
