USB Sound Card Performance

OK so I was considering buying some speakers for the PC but most of the ones I have been looking at have sound cards built in to the speakers so they interface to the PC via a USB. This concerns me a little becuase surely a USB interface is a lot less efficient than a PCIe interface? So a USB sound card should put more load on the CPU than an internal card? The intention is to use the speakers for gaming so I don't want an unnecessary CPU load. Can anyone tell me what sort of impact using a USB interface has on gaming? Or am I worrying about nothing becuase my ideas are just completely out of date?? Lol.

For any even remotely modern PC load is about as significant as horoscopes and positions of planets.

Anyway what kind speakers are you looking at?
While gaming can be said to have lower accuracy requirements than music, for being able to pick out game environment from sounds there are plenty of requirements.
(starting from stereo totally sucking in some game types)

It's negligible. It was more of an issue back in the days of single core CPUs. A sound card made a difference taking load off the CPU. Now modern multi core CPUs don't break a sweat.

Right!
I am honestly not sure about speakers at all. I have used headphones for years but have to move over to speakers now so I haven't got a clue. I keep completely changing my mind about what to get. The big problem is that my desk space is dominated by monitors so I can't fit in a large pair of speakers unless they can be placed on their side. To make matters worse there are cats in the house so at leaste the tweeters must have grills or the cones are likely to get damaged. I was considering a Soundblaster Katana but reading the reviews I am not so sure now. I am more a fan of simplicity over novelty so would really just prefer some decent powered speakers, but there is the size issue. Well actually I suppose it's more difficult to find some that have grills let alone are small enough to fit under the monitors.
Most of the games I play now just don't need headphones so it's just a pain to wear them. Much better to have some speakers but of course something I haven't done for years so I have no idea what to get.

What dimensions do they need to be?

You could consider a decent 2.1 setup, so two small satellite speakers under your monitors plus a small sub?

No more than 8 inches tall, or wide if they can be put on their sides. A sub would be fine, but I am not huge fan of bass so nthing excessive needed.

Must be bad fitting headphones.
I can wear mine for basically whole day without problems.
In fact it's something like decade since I last had speakers on my PC.

It's nothing to do with comfort, it is everything to do with not needing to wear them. I am not playing games that need accurate positioning, so it's just inconvenient to wear headphones. I find myself listening to the monitor speakers all the time, which of course are pretty rubbish. So I am looking for an upgrade. Thing is I tend to have issues with too many features and not enough sound from many solutions. I think I may just get some Audioengine A2+'s. Although they don't have grills they tick most of the other boxes.
