I want to be able to use a external USB HDD on a laptop and a desktop, both plugged in at the same time. Is this possible, is there a USB splitter cable or the like that anyone can recommend that will allow this to function?

I want to be able to save files on the HDD from either the desktop or laptop and open the files from either, like a mini file share device.

The machines are in different domains and I don't want to network them to enable file share, so though this may be an option if it's possible.

Would something like dropbox not work for you? as a file sharing solution.
I don't think you can share the HD like that, you might be able to get a switched hub of some type but I think simultaneous access is not possible

Not possible for what you want. You would need a network and a NAS. You can use a USB sharing device which has 2 pc ports, and 4 USB ports. I have one, you have to switch it between pcs to use it. Similar to a kvm.

PhillyDee - what' the make\model of the sharing device that you have and I will have a study of it. Cheers.

Its a
4 Port USB 2.0 Switching Hub
Can be had cheaper than the first link.

It basically disconnects 1 port and connects the other at the same time. Just the same as unplugging it, but slightly easier.
